A Little Bit of Background
For those who don't know much about the subject of Lake Apopka, here is a little bit of background on the history of the Lake and why we are working on this project. The Lake Apopka situation is unusual because the impact on the environment has overshadowed the impact on people's lives.
The following excerpt was taken from Jim Berry's youtube: "Farmworkers are creating a memorial quilt to those who have passed away due the environmental illnesses contracted from working on Lake Apopka farmland. Those farmlands were closed by the EPA in 1998 because of pesticide contamination of the soil. The workshops were sponsored by a mini-grant from the Florida Humanities Council funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities."
Out of the muck is a video documenting some of the issues Lake Apopka workers deal with on a daily basis. It was created by Rollins students, and is a great introduction to the topic.
